All-Southeastern District Team 2011
by Andy Hilton, recruit757.com
November 18, 2011
This was the year that Suffolk stood out. The Lakeland Cavaliers
roared into contention after going 0-10 in 2010. Lakeland’s junior
running back Raekwon Johnson was forced into part time quarterback
duty and ended up splitting Offensive Player of the Year honors with
Oscar Smith running back J.C. Coleman. Nansemond River had a
resurgent year and ended up just a win short of a playoff berth at
5-5. King’s Fork junior defensive back Charles Clark won Defensive
Player of the Year honors, giving the Suffolk schools a strong
presence in year-end awards for the first time in years.
Here are
the All-Southeastern District teams for 2011 as
voted on by the coaches of the Southeastern District.
Weightlifting & Conditioning:
Begins Nov. 28. Check weightlifting page for details.

High School Preview 2011: Southeastern
District
By Larry Rubama
Virginian Pilot
August 25, 2011
HICKORY HAWKS
Last season 6-4 overall, 5-4 district
Coach Jupiter Wilson, first season
Impact players OL/DL Troy Butler, 6-3, 290, sr.; WR/S Andrew Donafrio,
5-11, 170, jr.; OL/DL Scott Fahey, 5-11, 270, sr.; FB/LB Zachary Niece, 5-9,
230, jr.; FB/LB Conley Smith, 6-0, 230, sr.
On the field Since arriving at Hickory, Wilson has
preached that he’s trying to change the mindset at the school. “I want us as
a team to be able to put expectations high,” he said. The Hawks will run a
pro-style offense with multiple sets, predominately out of the I formation.
Leading the way is Smith, a tough, hard-nosed runner who loves to run over
would-be tacklers. Wilson, a former lineman at North Carolina, says the
offense will be led by the line. Defensively, the Hawks will be tough at
linebacker, led by Smith, Niece and Mason Melee. “We were 6-4 last year and
we lost by two points to Deep Creek and led Grassfield 21-0. So you’re
talking about a team that could have been 8-2,” Wilson said. “I really see
us winning seven, eight or even nine games.”
Bottom line The Hawks will be competitive in the upper
half of the district but winning seven or more games could be a stretch.

ODU
football: Hickory lineman picks the Monarchs
By Rich Radford
The Virginian-Pilot
July 29, 2011
Troy Butler, a 6-foot-3, 288-pound offensive lineman from Chesapeake's
Hickory High, committed to sign with Old Dominion. At least this way, his
parents can go to the games.
Butler said his parents tried to get season tickets two years ago when ODU
started football. But they were left out when the first two seasons were
sold out. With Butler playing for ODU, his mother and father will be
eligible for parents' tickets.
Butler is 1 of 3 Monarchs commitments in the past 24 hours.
Andrew Maddox, a 6-5, 275-pound offensive lineman from Woodbridge High, and
Fellonte Misher, a 6-foot, 181-pound safety, also said they'd sign with ODU.
Maddox picked the Monarchs over Buffalo, Ohio, Western Michigan and Virginia
Military Institute. Misher selected ODU over Youngstown State.
Butler was being recruited by Western Michigan, Ball State and Liberty.
Misher's other offer was from Youngstown State.

New Head Coach, Jupiter Wilson
By Jami Frankenberry
The Virginian-Pilot
© February 10, 2011
CHESAPEAKE
Hickory
turned to an alum – and a former standout lineman at North Carolina – to be
the Hawks’ new football coach. Jupiter Wilson, 29, was hired Wednesday to
replace Tim Sitterson, who resigned in December after three seasons.
Wilson was an All-Tidewater lineman at Hickory,
graduating in 1999. He then was a three-year starter on the offensive line
at North Carolina and played in the Arena Football League.
Wilson most recently was the offensive coordinator at
Vance High School in Charlotte, N.C. He also coached track at Vance and
guided the boys team to the 2010 North Carolina 4A state title. Wilson takes
over a Hickory program that finished 6-4 this past season and went 12-18
under Sitterson.
“We had really good quality people that applied,” Hawks
athletic director Kevin Cole said. Wilson “was just somebody that we thought
could take us to the next level, have a different outlook on things. There
was really a lot of enthusiasm he brought to the table.” Hickory’s
hire – a day after Norview hired a coach from California – leaves Maury as
the only remaining Group AAA school in South Hampton Roads searching for a
new football coach.
